Recap March Meeting 2015

Hello Modern Quilters!  Here is your monthly recap of our March Meeting.


Committee Updates:

Activites:

  • Log Cabin Challenge is due next Month. Start with the "idea" of  the Log Cabin Block and spin it off in any MODERN direction you want. Bring in your finished pieces as well as WIP's to share.
  • Fat 1/4 Swap - Congratulations Tara on winning this month.  Next month's theme is "flowers"
Charity:
  • The Charity Committee is accepting your Log Cabin Blocks in pinks, purples & teals in the following sizes: 6.5, 12.5 and/or 18.5.  Thank you in advance.

 


Special Events:
  • MQX Show, Manchester, NH, April 8-11. Jessica is coordinating carpools to attend the show either daily or overnight. If we can get enough people, we may qualify for a group discount admittance ticket. Email Jessica for more info.  at: archer.icon@gmail.com

  • Saturday, April 25th, Rochambeau Public Library, Providence 1:30-3:30. Let's gather together to watch a MQG Webinar (stay tuned for which one). 
Wrap-Up on Sewing Day!  We had a great group of quilters who were anxious to get out of their studios for some quilting, chatting and sharing. Thank you to Sue A. for leading a workshop of "Slice and Insert" We will collect blocks from everyone to put together a quilt to be given to The Cumberland Library as a thank you! Blocks are due in May.  Contact us if you would like to get some fabric (gray and oranges) to make a block to contribute.



Show and Tell:

 Jessica took a long-arm class and sewed the alphabet on her quilt!

 Tina's Spring quilt is made with "cool modern" scraps.

 Besties, MaryAnn and Denise shared their sister quilts!

 Denise also showed her "piecing with poppies" runner.


 Kathy shared her quilts from her Maine retreat. The green one is for her son.

 Meredith's photo transfer cat quilt was a hit!

 Suzanne's colorful quilt was beautiful.

 Pat's Log Cabin handing was based off a photo from Italy.

Karen shared a wool quilted piece onto a scarf.

Keep Calm &  Keep Quilting cause Spring is on its way!!!...............  see you all next month!

March Meeting Recap

A big thank you to Pat at Ryco for generously offering us a bigger, brighter space for our monthly meetings. Our group is growing and this new space is going to be wonderful from now on.


There was a lot to cover this month. MQG pins and official member cards were passed out to those who have signed up to be members of the guild. There are lots of quilt shows coming up this Spring (see bottom of page) Here's what happened....

Quilt Critique:  What makes a quilt modern? We had a lively discussion of traditional vs. modern. We will continue this critique each month since it was so helpful for m any of us. 


Charity Committee:  Kathryn showed us some examples of the "knee sock" quilt block we will be sewing for our charity quilts. We will gladly accept any blocks you make and bring in to the monthly meetings. Email us if you want more info.  Also, Carole Ann had two requests for charity work (her post is on the RIMQG Members 2014 page)

Monthly Topic: Leslie introduced our new monthly activity challenge. "Color Theory" Block of the month, on Craftsy.com.  Click here for details to sign up for this free ongoing class.  Please bring your completed January Block to the next meeting in April.


Special Events Committee:  Becky has set up our 1st RIMQG Sewing Day! It will be held at Ryco on Saturday, April 5th starting at 10:30 am.  Bring your machine and supplies and get ready to have a great time till the meeting at 2:00 pm. Please RSVP to Becky at rebecamara79@hotmail.com
to reserve your spot.

WIP Switch Challenge: If you have WIP's, post them on our FB pages and anyone who wants to take up that challenge can communicate with the member. If you aren't on FB, feel free to bring it to the meeting and you will have the opportunity to show it.

3x3 Binding Demo:  Carole Ann, Tara and Coco each demonstrated their own personal binding method. This was a huge hit and everyone took some valuable information away from that to practice at home.


Show & Tell: Here are some of what our talented members are quilting this month!
 Tara's black, yellow and white quilt is striking!

 Sue's pastel table runners were beautiful!

 Maria showed us her gorgeous quilt!

 Jenn introduced us to her jelly roll race quilt.

 Suzanne made an Art quilt utilizing the "couching" technique.

 Kathy had expirimented with an Aboriginal with solids quilt!

 Charity's Disappearing 9 Patch was a big hit!

Carole Ann showed us her scrap cascade quilt!

Modern Quilt Guild (MGQ)  Michael Miller Challenge: Carole Anne will keep us posted on this challenge. When the fabric arrives it will be distributed to those who signed up.

National Quilting Day is Saturday, March 15. Quilt Guild Members--bring your valid guild membership card and get in free!
