Recap February 2015 Meeting

It was great to see old and new members at the February Meeting! Welcome to our guests who joined us for the first time - we hope you will consider joining our Guild for 2015!

Sewing Day Announcement!

We will host an Open Sewing Day on Saturday, March 7th from 10-2 at The Cumberland Public Library (same room our monthly meetings are held in).  Sue A. will lead a workshop in "Slice and Insert".  This workshop is optional. Feel free to bring whatever you want to work on and please bring irons/boards/extension cords, and bag lunch, etc...  An email RSVP form will be sent out to current paid members separately this week. 


Log Cabin Challenge:  

Our guild's current challenge is "Modern Log Cabin". The only rule is you must create some quilted item using the structure of a log cabin. You are encouraged to think outside the box and make it Modern! For example, wonky blocks, One huge block, modern fabrics/colors, etc...  Please click here to get to our RI Modern Quilt Guild Pinterest Page for inspiration. Due: April Meeting.

Committee Reports: our newly formed committees got together to brainstorm and share their ideas with the group.


Charity Committee - We will use extra log cabin blocks in pinks, purples and teals to create a new charity quilt. More info to come. Everyone is welcome to contribute. 

Activities Committee - Fat Quarter Swaps, Vendor presentations, monthly demos are some of the ideas this committee has lined up for us.  A Sewing Day and workshop is scheduled for March 7th (see below for more details). March Fat Quarter Swap will be the color GREEN

Special Events Committee - Field Trips are being planned for MQX in April, Pine Tree Quilt Show in Maine in July, Essex Junction, VT Quilt Show. There is interest in planning a RIMQG Quilt Show in 2015.  A committee will be need to be started. Stay tuned for details on these events.

Modern Quilt Bee:

The 2nd Quilt Bee has begun. We will look forward to seeing the Hives' blocks next month!

MQG Challenge: 

It was announced that Leslie purchased enough extra fabric for the Modern Quilt Cottage Garden Challenge to allow 8 extra quilters participate in the national guild challenge. You must be a paid 2015 RIMQG member to be eligible.

 She wasn't satisfied, so she redesigned it using Kaffe Fassett fabrics!

 Sue A's mini was inspired by a Zen Chic pattern!

 Becky's Niece, Sophia shared her first quilt. All the sewing was done by her!

 Becky shared her 1st Bee Quilt. Her nine patch set on point is beautiful!

 Suzanne shared her bright primary colored quilt. Note the quilting extends out into border!

 Something old can be something new...  Suzanne is contemplating free motion quilting an old flower basket quilt.

What a lucky grandchild to have Mary Ann as a Grandma! She has finished sewing the baptismal gown!

 Meredith Cat Grooming quilt is made from wool!

Recap January 2015 Meeting

Happy 2015 Modern Quilters!!

We had a terrific turnout for our first meeting of the new year. Thank you for renewing or signing up for the 2015 Membership Year.
 REMINDER - we must receive your dues before the Feb. 7th meeting.  

Here is what we did.......

Monthly Activity - Notions 101


Lots of great advice was shared and here are some of the notions we all love to use:

Add a 1/4 ruler, applique scissors by Karen Buckley, iPhone camera for layouts, Robert Kaufman App calculator, decorative seam rippers, lint rollers for ironing board, various marking pens - air erase, chalk, dental tools for points, etc., bird feather to clean channel of machine, Niagara Spray starch, Teflon slider for FMQ, clover wonder clips

LOG CABIN 3 month CHALLENGE ANNOUNCEMENT!!


The only RULE for this challenge is to start from the LOG CABIN BLOCK. You may create a quilt project of any size, shape, and color.  It will be due at the April Meeting.  Feel free to post photos, ideas, ask advice on our Facebook Members Page.  Leslie has created a Board on Pinterest for just this challenge! Get creative and modern - 1 giant block, all solids, gradation of color, deconstructed blocks. 


Items of Interest.....


Our Guild's 1st Charity Quilt was donated to the Ronald McDonald House of Providence, RI. They were thrilled and very appreciative. Here is Karen presenting it to CEO, Michael Fantom.

Committee Sign-Up Sheets were passed around at the meeting. If you were not present and would like to take a more active role in the Guild, we encourage you to email us and sign up for any of the Committees (Activities, Charity, or Special Events)  For further information about each one, email Tara.

Modern Quilt Bee - This is your chance to join round #2 of our popular Modern Bee Group. Email Tara to sign up. February will be the 1st of 6 months. Must use free patters only.

If you are a RIMQG member and on Facebook, we encourage you to request to be a group member on our Members Page. Check in every so often to get tips, resources, and ask advice of other members between our monthly meetings.

Jenn's little boys will surely love their Star Wars Quilt on a cold winter's night!

Celeste's Asian Kimono Quilt is gorgeous!


There is no doubt that Sue's Slice and Insert quilt is very modern!

Celine's Scrappy Quilt is a feast for the eyes and senses!


Our first Jr. Member, Rachael shared several of her award winning MQX quilts - Here is a darling purple one.

Recap of December 2014 Meeting

Out last meeting for 2014 was fabulous!  There is so much talent in our group!

We will continue to develop and evolve as a Modern Quilt Guild and with everyone's enthusiasm and energy, next year will be even better!

We enjoyed goodies provided by Leslie and Tara and had a very lively brainstorming session to explore plans for next year. Thank you for all your wonderful ideas and suggestions.  The Board and Committees will take all that input and plan some exciting meetings and events for 2015!

 Denise shared the story of the "love" quilt made for her daughter. What a Mom!

 Meredith's color challenge quilt has become a very sweet and personal momento for her!

 Linda shared several beautiful quilts/projects. This one is created using the
"Sew Kind of Wonderful" Ruler
 This is her chevron quilt - very modern!

 These mini projects are part of her certification requirements - very nice!

Kathy's modern quilt is a bit of an illusion - it's really a nine-patch!
 Her gorgeous charcoal quilt using quilter's linen will make someone very happy!

 Jodi explained her Leaders & Enders quilt made from oodles of tiny squares!
Can't wait to see the finished quilt.


Modern Quilting Bee

The Modern Bee has caught on like wildfire! Here are some of our completed quilts from this first session!

Tara designed a beautiful and unique Bee quilt!



Leslie used the grey Michael Miller fabric for her Bee Quilt's background! 
Love it!

Suzanne named her Bee Quilt "Ancient Messages" and it has a beautiful Aztec feel to it!

Charity Quilt!

With the wonderful help from so many members, we have completed our FIRST charity quilt. We will finalize our recipient before the end of the year and post the news later on in the month!

Recap November Meeting

October RIMQG Meeting Recap

Thank you to all members and guests who attended our October Meeting this past Saturday!

RIMQG Board Member Elections:

We will vote on our 2015 Board at the November Meeting. If you would like to get more involved in the Guild, please contact Carole Ann at rimodernquiltguild@gmail.com or Tara Coogan at ewehavemeinstitches@gmail.com to get specific position information and to get your name on the ballot.  This is a great way to support our growing Guild and make new friends.

Monthly Topic:

We shared ideas and samples of Holiday gift projects. Here are a few of them: 
 *pillow cases, ornaments, draft stoppers, chalk fabric place mats. Leslie shared her go to book.


Fat Quarter Swap:

We will continue the Modern Fat Quarter Swap into the November meeting! Bring a fat quarter and go home with a fresh one (maybe use it for a holiday gift!)

August Meeting Recap!


Thanks to the Activities Committee for arranging our August Meeting at Lincoln Woods. We had a beautiful summer day under the trees sharing and inspiring one another.


Thank you to all who donated and purchased from our Yard Sale. Proceeds will go towards future workshops, speakers and events to enhance our growing RIMQG Community.

Also, a big thanks to those who brought food and drink to our outdoor pot luck today.

Quilting Bee Update

Assignments were handed out to the members who chose to participate in our 1st Modern Quilt Bee. Three groups of 6 quilters were assigned 2 blocks per month. It was decided we will bring our finished blocks to each meeting for everyone to see. Thank you Jen and Charity for spearheading this Bee.

RI local, a founding member of The Boston Modern Quilt Guild, and Quilt Book Author Rachel May will be our Guest Speaker for a special event to take place on Saturday afternoon, October 25th. Free to members, $5.00 for others.  Get this on your calendars now and more details to follow!



Activity Committee

New Challenge is introduced for RIMQG:

The new challenge was presented and it will involve using Black and White fabric with the addition of ONE other color. Several members had the savvy suggestion that variations of those three colors may be used. For example, if you choose Pink as your one color, it was range from Blush to Magenta.  That is extent of rules. Any size, Any shape!   It will be due for the November Meeting.

Monthly Topic

September's monthly topic will be a 3x3 applique demo. Let's learn or brush up on three ways to use this skill in our modern quilting.

July Meeting Recap

We had a great turnout this month, and we had FIVE first time visitors! 

Meeting Recap:

Special Events Committee Update: August retreat is fast approaching and will be so much fun! We will also be planning a Happy Hour in Downtown Providence for a social meet up; look for the date/location in an upcoming newsletter.

Activities Committee Update: Next month is our "Quilting Notions Yard Sale"; we will be hosting our monthly meeting at Lincoln Woods Park (exact location to follow in newsletter) for a potluck lunch, yard sale to benefit the guild, and usual meeting activities. If you have anything to contribute to the yard sale, please bring it ready to go so that we can get it priced quickly. Please bring personal checks or small bills to pay for items.

Charity Committee Update: Continually collecting blocks (from print out template), backing fabric, and batting. If you are interested in piecing/quilting, we have enough blocks to make our first charity quilt! See a committee member or guild leader to participate.

Modern Bee: Jenn and Charity are leading our guild Modern Bee; if you signed up, look for an email from Jenn to coordinate. We decided to do a 6-month Bee, so that participants could finish their quilt faster. This will require each participant to make two blocks per month. We are so excited to see this come together and look forward to seeing the blocks/quilts that result!

"Getting to know you" Interview Series: Sue was the first member highlighted in this new series (see previous post!) We thought this was fun and we learned a lot about her! Look out for another member to be highlighted this month and see a guild leader to volunteer to be interviewed for future months!

Tara had a lot of negative space and filled it with dense and varied FMQ patterns



 Tina shared this mini quilt that she designed on EQ7 using HST's

Jill shared a mini quilt that she applique'd hexagons; demo coming soon! 


 Jodi embraced the negative space challenge too; with this creative display of plants and a kite


Desirae and Suzanne improv designed this quilt; very modern use of improv piecing and off-center white borders

Jenn shared her shooting stars quilt; the FMQ makes it look like they're shooting!

Leslie is getting creative with different FMQ patterns with this awesome take on a Dresden plate


Tara made use of that negative space to showcase a sampler grid of the challenge fabrics

Suzanne made these circles pop with a black contrasting background

Mary made a bag and used different FMQ designs in each column

Sue let the fabric patterns make the shapes of the butterflies, tree, and sun. The mailbox even says "Michael Miller!"

Lisa used different sized pinwheels to showcase the challenge fabrics


Becky embraced the modern layout and did some "echo" quilting


Carole Ann did some nice applique of these petals and did a ton of swirls for her FMQ

Wow! so many challenge projects!! thanks to everyone who participated and we look forward to doing this again next year with the MQG, and later this year within our guild!

June Meeting Recap


RI Modern Quilt Guild Sewing Day!


We had a wonderful Sewing Day filled with machines buzzing, good food, sharing ideas and projects and great community building over our common bond of Modern Quilting. If you couldn't make this event, we will be sure to host more of these in the future.

Meeting Recap:

Update on Michael Miller Challenge from MQG - Bring your completed challenge project to the July 12th meeting, when we will finally share our creations. Upload your picture to the Community Site of MQG before July 25th deadline.

Update on Quilters Retreat - 2nd Wave was filled. The girls are looking forward to some uninterrupted sewing time in Vermont!

Batting Presentation - Thanks Leslie for teaching us about the myriad of choices of batting available for our quilting projects. She explained and passed around a sample pack she had picked up at a Quilt Show. There is always something new to learn about batting.


Committee Updates:

     Charity Committee: We have enough blocks for our first Charity Quilt. Please keep those blocks coming and we always welcome donations of batting and backing. Thanks in advance!

     Activities Committee:  Modern Fabric/Supplies Yard Sale! Will take place at our August 9th Meeting. We'll have a pot luck at Lincoln Woods (very close to Ryco) and enjoy buying some new items for our stash. Proceeds go to the Guild.  Bring your items to the July 12th meeting.

     RIMQG Quilting Bee:  Charity and Jenn introduced a new spin on an old-fashioned concept - the Quilt Bee. This will be open to Members (if you haven't joined as a member yet, this is your incentive!) and we are hoping to get 12 or more members to sign up. Details will follow.

     NEW!! Highlight a RIMQG Member Interview:  Coming soon... Look for our new topic in our BLOG. We will interview and share the story of a member.
