Recap of September 2015 Meeting

Welcome Back!

September is here and everyone is in full swing with Fall activities, including lots of quilting!
We had a wonderful meeting and everyone walked away with tips and inspiration to go home with!

We are in full swing to promote next month's meeting. Please mark your calendars and spread the word to attend our October 3rd Saturday meeting from 2-4 pm. Members $5.00/ Non-Members $10.

Timna will be hosting a workshop entitled "Designing with Flying Colors" on Friday, Oct. 2 for the Quilters by the Sea Guild in Portsmouth, RI. They have graciously opened the workshop to RIMQG members if space allows. $40 for full day workshop.  Please contact Susan Rood (susancats@cox.net) if you would like to be put on the list.

Quilt Show at the Fine Furnishings Show - Important Details!

We will be accepting modern quilts for our first quilt show to be hung at the Fine Furnishings Show at the Pawtucket Armory on November 6-8th. Friday night through Sunday. This is a high-end furniture show and this is a fabulous opportunity to share with the public our amazing modern quilts! You may choose to sell or not. Bring your best work to the October meeting and make sure you label your quilt and attach an Entry Form with each quilt.

Leslie Lowenstein (ljlowenstein@cox.net) and Jill Belisle  (jillb3441@hotmail.com) will be coordinating this event. Please email them to sign up for show volunteering and entry information or any other questions. 


Quilting Retreat:

6 lucky ladies will be quilting up a storm at the Fall Retreat. Why not plan on attending the next one?

Next Challenge:

Our next guild challenge will be "SOLIDS".  There are no size or design rules. Just use your creativity and modern aesthetic to make this challenge really pop!  Due on January 9, 2016 meeting.

Fat Quarter Swap:

Next month's theme will be FALL - bring your modern fall fat 1/4's and go home with something too!

What is your favorite shortcut?
  • Creative Grids "stripology" ruler
  • Elmer's Washable School Glue to assist in binding
  • Half square triangle methods: "folded corner clipper", "quilt in a day triangle square up ruler", magic 8 video on Craftsy
  • Judy Lancaster of Ryco will be teaching a 7 methods of cutting triangles class.

Show and Tell:

 Tina shared her Wild & Goosey patterned flying geese quilt!

 Patricia brought in her challenge quilt which was inspired by the photo to the right.

 Patricia also finished her star quilt using batiks.

 Suzanne completed up a circle wall hanging with pebble quilting!

 Suzanne got lots of ooh's and ahh's with her bird house log cabin quilt!

 MaryAnn made an adorable wall hanging for the Riley Blake challenge!

 Karen shared her daughter's quilt made by both Karen and her Mom.


 Jenn's sewing machine cover is really neat!

 Jenn also completed a quilting bee quilt called "Twister" and features a text background.

 Fred cleverly calls this his "Nap" quilt (larger version of a Lap quilt!)

 Fred explained his unique technique of serging his quilted squares together for complete his quilts!

 Sue Ellen had a wonderful time making these bright stars for her quilt!

 Mary K. showed off her bee quilt showing the wonky crosses the members made for her!

 Mary also shared her orange sashed music themed quilt top.

 Denise finished her son's strip quilt on a grey background!

 Denise also wowed us with her shadow block quilt!

 Kathy's mini Cotton and Steel was made using the Stripology Ruler!

 Kathy also shared her disappearing 9-patch using Malka Dubrawsky fabric.

Her "non-modern" night and day star quilt is striking!

Recap March Meeting 2015

Hello Modern Quilters!  Here is your monthly recap of our March Meeting.


Committee Updates:

Activites:

  • Log Cabin Challenge is due next Month. Start with the "idea" of  the Log Cabin Block and spin it off in any MODERN direction you want. Bring in your finished pieces as well as WIP's to share.
  • Fat 1/4 Swap - Congratulations Tara on winning this month.  Next month's theme is "flowers"
Charity:
  • The Charity Committee is accepting your Log Cabin Blocks in pinks, purples & teals in the following sizes: 6.5, 12.5 and/or 18.5.  Thank you in advance.

 


Special Events:
  • MQX Show, Manchester, NH, April 8-11. Jessica is coordinating carpools to attend the show either daily or overnight. If we can get enough people, we may qualify for a group discount admittance ticket. Email Jessica for more info.  at: archer.icon@gmail.com

  • Saturday, April 25th, Rochambeau Public Library, Providence 1:30-3:30. Let's gather together to watch a MQG Webinar (stay tuned for which one). 
Wrap-Up on Sewing Day!  We had a great group of quilters who were anxious to get out of their studios for some quilting, chatting and sharing. Thank you to Sue A. for leading a workshop of "Slice and Insert" We will collect blocks from everyone to put together a quilt to be given to The Cumberland Library as a thank you! Blocks are due in May.  Contact us if you would like to get some fabric (gray and oranges) to make a block to contribute.

 Jessica took a long-arm class and sewed the alphabet on her quilt!

 Tina's Spring quilt is made with "cool modern" scraps.

 Besties, MaryAnn and Denise shared their sister quilts!

 Denise also showed her "piecing with poppies" runner.


 Kathy shared her quilts from her Maine retreat. The green one is for her son.

 Meredith's photo transfer cat quilt was a hit!

 Suzanne's colorful quilt was beautiful.

 Pat's Log Cabin handing was based off a photo from Italy.

Karen shared a wool quilted piece onto a scarf.

Recap February 2015 Meeting

It was great to see old and new members at the February Meeting! Welcome to our guests who joined us for the first time - we hope you will consider joining our Guild for 2015!

Sewing Day Announcement!

We will host an Open Sewing Day on Saturday, March 7th from 10-2 at The Cumberland Public Library (same room our monthly meetings are held in).  Sue A. will lead a workshop in "Slice and Insert".  This workshop is optional. Feel free to bring whatever you want to work on and please bring irons/boards/extension cords, and bag lunch, etc...  An email RSVP form will be sent out to current paid members separately this week. 


Log Cabin Challenge:  

Our guild's current challenge is "Modern Log Cabin". The only rule is you must create some quilted item using the structure of a log cabin. You are encouraged to think outside the box and make it Modern! For example, wonky blocks, One huge block, modern fabrics/colors, etc...  Please click here to get to our RI Modern Quilt Guild Pinterest Page for inspiration. Due: April Meeting.

Committee Reports: our newly formed committees got together to brainstorm and share their ideas with the group.


Charity Committee - We will use extra log cabin blocks in pinks, purples and teals to create a new charity quilt. More info to come. Everyone is welcome to contribute. 

Activities Committee - Fat Quarter Swaps, Vendor presentations, monthly demos are some of the ideas this committee has lined up for us.  A Sewing Day and workshop is scheduled for March 7th (see below for more details). March Fat Quarter Swap will be the color GREEN

Special Events Committee - Field Trips are being planned for MQX in April, Pine Tree Quilt Show in Maine in July, Essex Junction, VT Quilt Show. There is interest in planning a RIMQG Quilt Show in 2015.  A committee will be need to be started. Stay tuned for details on these events.

Modern Quilt Bee:

The 2nd Quilt Bee has begun. We will look forward to seeing the Hives' blocks next month!

MQG Challenge: 

It was announced that Leslie purchased enough extra fabric for the Modern Quilt Cottage Garden Challenge to allow 8 extra quilters participate in the national guild challenge. You must be a paid 2015 RIMQG member to be eligible.

 Karen's almost finished quilting her 1st Bee Quilt.

 Jessica's Batik Jelly Roll Quilt has beautiful color choices!

 Judy's improv piece is log-cabin inspired!

 Jenn's Tula Pink Cross quilt is smashing! Pretty muted grey backing.

 Tina's Schnitzel & Boo mini swap showcases her favorite colors - orange and blue!

 Tina's shows a sample of a selvage Log Cabin block.

Jr. Member Rachel quilted this multi-green quilt in striking black thread!

 Kathy's "Sew Kind of Wonderful" ruler quilt is really snazzy!
 She wasn't satisfied, so she redesigned it using Kaffe Fassett fabrics!

 Sue Castler shows us her finished quilt from a Rayna Gillman Workshop she took this summer.

 Here is another in progress piece from the Hudson Valley Fiber Arts Workshop by Sue!

 Sue A's mini was inspired by a Zen Chic pattern!

 Becky's Niece, Sophia shared her first quilt. All the sewing was done by her!

 Becky shared her 1st Bee Quilt. Her nine patch set on point is beautiful!

 Suzanne shared her bright primary colored quilt. Note the quilting extends out into border!

 Something old can be something new...  Suzanne is contemplating free motion quilting an old flower basket quilt.

What a lucky grandchild to have Mary Ann as a Grandma! She has finished sewing the baptismal gown!

 Meredith Cat Grooming quilt is made from wool!

October RIMQG Meeting Recap

Thank you to all members and guests who attended our October Meeting this past Saturday!

RIMQG Board Member Elections:

We will vote on our 2015 Board at the November Meeting. If you would like to get more involved in the Guild, please contact Carole Ann at rimodernquiltguild@gmail.com or Tara Coogan at ewehavemeinstitches@gmail.com to get specific position information and to get your name on the ballot.  This is a great way to support our growing Guild and make new friends.

Monthly Topic:

We shared ideas and samples of Holiday gift projects. Here are a few of them: 
 *pillow cases, ornaments, draft stoppers, chalk fabric place mats. Leslie shared her go to book.


Fat Quarter Swap:

We will continue the Modern Fat Quarter Swap into the November meeting! Bring a fat quarter and go home with a fresh one (maybe use it for a holiday gift!)

 Tara Celeste's Baby Quilt with bikes was a hit! (so was her little cutie)

September Meeting Recap

We had a great turnout for our September meeting at our new location at The Cumberland Public Library.  Thank you all for coming and welcome to our guests.

Sue Bleiweiss and Nancy Turbitt, of SAQA were here to introduce our members to the Studio Art Quilt Associates. Sue is one of the MA/RI Regional Reps for SAQA and Nancy is from RI. Check out the SAQA Regional Blog for details on upcoming events.


Committee Updates:

Activity Committee:   Black and White Challenge - Using Black and White with the addition of one other color (variations OK) and create a modern quilt project.  DUE:  November Meeting!

Charity Committee: Karen pieced donated blocks together, Jodi offered to quilt it, Jenn offered to bind our 1st Charity Quilt! Keep those blocks coming - thanks in advance!

Special Events Committee:  Mark your calendars for a special guest speaker on Saturday October 25th!  Rachel May!!

Thank you to Suzanne, Tina and Leslie for demoing their personal techniques for applique. We all picked up a tip or two from these talented ladies.

August Meeting Recap!


Thanks to the Activities Committee for arranging our August Meeting at Lincoln Woods. We had a beautiful summer day under the trees sharing and inspiring one another.


Thank you to all who donated and purchased from our Yard Sale. Proceeds will go towards future workshops, speakers and events to enhance our growing RIMQG Community.

Also, a big thanks to those who brought food and drink to our outdoor pot luck today.

Quilting Bee Update

Assignments were handed out to the members who chose to participate in our 1st Modern Quilt Bee. Three groups of 6 quilters were assigned 2 blocks per month. It was decided we will bring our finished blocks to each meeting for everyone to see. Thank you Jen and Charity for spearheading this Bee.

RI local, a founding member of The Boston Modern Quilt Guild, and Quilt Book Author Rachel May will be our Guest Speaker for a special event to take place on Saturday afternoon, October 25th. Free to members, $5.00 for others.  Get this on your calendars now and more details to follow!



Activity Committee

New Challenge is introduced for RIMQG:

The new challenge was presented and it will involve using Black and White fabric with the addition of ONE other color. Several members had the savvy suggestion that variations of those three colors may be used. For example, if you choose Pink as your one color, it was range from Blush to Magenta.  That is extent of rules. Any size, Any shape!   It will be due for the November Meeting.

Monthly Topic

September's monthly topic will be a 3x3 applique demo. Let's learn or brush up on three ways to use this skill in our modern quilting.
