February 2016 Meeting Recap

Thank you all for coming to join us at our February meeting!

We had a great turn out at this month's meeting and we welcomed 3 new members! Here's what happened.....

The Mighty Lucky Quilting group met at 1:00 to discuss February's challenge "Minimalist Improvisation" presented by Season Evans.

The goal of this challenge was to create a patchwork panel using minimalist principles: a few colors (possibly just solids) and having a clear focus on color, shape or movement. We were advised to gather our fabrics with a focus fabric in mind, coordinating solids and contrasting solids. The key technique with this challenge was to limit the choices of fabrics, let the focus fabric guide you when making the piece, and paring down choices through thoughtful subtraction. We had a few examples to share and a great discussion on this challenge. Members were pleasantly surprised to see completed projects for this month, as well as Jen Smith's completed January bias tape project.

Minimal improv block made by Jenn B. She later turned it into a pillow.
Jen Smith shared this cute pillow she made using January's bias tape
project

For those of you that may not know, this is a monthly subscription club through a quilting website Lucky Spool. A popular quilt designer/teacher will teach a different concept (through PDF) for you to try each month of the year. You can sign up for the year or monthly, and all instructions are emailed right to you! This group will meet monthly at 1:00 pm before the RIMQG meeting to discuss that month's challenge and share ideas. If you are a paid RIMQG member, you can join the Facebook Group (see our FB page for members). Webinar Viewing

We watched the MQG webinar "Awaken Your Inner COLOR GENIUS" by Carrie Bloomston at this month's meeting. Carrie's webinar discussed basic color theory and helped us tap into our own innate sense of color through a few different exercises discussed in the webinar. We hope that you enjoyed it! For more information on The MQG's free webinar series, please click on this link: themodernquiltguild.com and go to the Community tab at the top of the page. The webinars are free for paid members, but you must login to view them.

HOMEWORK for next meeting:

At the March meeting, Allison Wilbur will help us go deeper into the world of color with a series of fun activities! Please raid your stash and come prepared with the following supplies (if possible):
  • 10-20 charm squares (5-inch squares) representing as many colors around the color wheel as you can (approx. 2 squares per color is ideal)
  • 1 or 2 fat quarters in neutral colors
  • Prints or solids will work. Please note everybody’s charm squares will be mixed together during the activity, so you might want to label yours with stickers or masking tape so you can collect them at the end.

Valentine's Fabric Postcard Swap!

Our fabric postcard swap is still underway through the month of February. Members that received a card brought them in to share. Please watch the mail for your card. One member let us know her postcard was stuck inside of some junk mail and she almost threw it out!! Isn't it fun to send and receive mail as pretty as this?!
